Making Histories Visible Archive visit Oct 2014

Professor Lubaina Himid invited PBHG members to visit her archive of Black artists, writers, designers and creative people. The Making Histories Visible Archive is based at UCLan (University of Central Lancashire) in Preston. We were impressed by the diversity of the archive and the artworks that are in the collection, including early work by Sonia Boyce and photographs by American photographer Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe who documented a unique culture of African Americans, the Gullah community of South Carolina, Daufuskie Island: A Photographic Essay.

The book of paintings by Isaac Bellisario from 1837 that show Jamaican Carnival characters in costume inspired one of Preston’s own carnival troupes to recreate the historical characters for the 2015 Preston Caribbean Carnival.
