David Knight explains the Culture Banner at the Out of Africa Launch

Out of Africa

Introduction – The Out of Africa Project is a beginner’s guide to the history and movement of African peoples and was made in response to a year-long consultation with people from all age groups in Preston. The Out of Africa Project explores some of the real history of Africa. We launched the Exhibition, Booklet and DVD at Jalgos at the beginning of Black History Month Oct 2011 where David Knight shared some of the wealth of knowledge he has built up through many years of research.

For the past 500 years the world was told, and believed, that Africa made no contribution to world history and culture. Whilst no longer accepted as truth this idea still colours people’s perceptions of Africa and African people. The ‘Out of Africa’ theory of the origin of modern humans is now well established. This theory states that the entire population of modern humans originated in Africa.

What greater contribution could there be to human history?

“Tremendously well put together night – all credit to David Knight, well paced and informative” Jonathan Pond, PBHG Treasurer
